Devotional From The Sermon: When We Pray: And God Says No

Devotional:

Jesus addressed God in Gethsemane with the intimate word Abba, meaning Father in the most tender and personal sense. This was not a formal address to a distant deity. It was the cry of a Son who knew his Father deeply because he had spent consistent, devoted time in his presence. The perspective we carry into prayer shapes everything about how we pray. When we know God as Father, we can bring our most desperate requests to him. And when we understand that he is also sovereign, we can trust that his thoughts and his ways, though higher than ours, are working on our behalf even when his answer is no.

Personal Reflection: How do you tend to think of God when you pray? As a distant authority, a wish-granter, or an intimate Father? How does that perception shape your expectations of prayer?

Practical Application: Begin your prayer time today by slowly and deliberately addressing God as Father. Spend several minutes simply acknowledging who he is before making any requests. Let relationship precede petition.
