Shalom: The Peace Only God Can Give
Devotional From The Sermon: When We Pray
Rev. Katrina Tatum
Reading:
John 14:27; Numbers 6:24-26
Devotional:
Jesus did not offer peace the way the world offers it. The world’s peace depends on favorable circumstances – a stable bank account, a healthy body, a quiet household. God’s shalom is different. It is wholeness, completeness, and welfare that exists independent of outward conditions. When Jesus spoke peace over the disciples in John 14:27, they were on the eve of his crucifixion. Chaos was hours away. Yet he said, “Let not your hearts be troubled.” The Shunammite woman’s declaration of “all is well” was not wishful thinking. It was the language of someone who had encountered Jehovah Shalom, the Lord of peace, personally.
Reflection Questions:
- How do you define peace in your daily life? Does your definition align with the biblical concept of shalom?
- In what ways has God provided wholeness in a situation that outwardly appeared broken?
Practical Application:
Pray the priestly blessing found in Numbers 6:24-26 over yourself, your family, and anyone in your life who is currently in need of God’s shalom. Let these words become a daily declaration over your household.
