Sermon Series: The Christ of a Comeback

Sermon Title: A Comeback From Foolish Choices

Reading: Isaiah 61:1-11

Devotional: “The Celebration of Restoration”

When the prodigal returned, the father didn’t lecture—he celebrated. He didn’t make his son earn his way back—he restored him immediately with robe, ring, and sandals. The best robe represented the father’s own righteousness covering the son’s shame. The ring symbolized authority and belonging. The sandals distinguished him from servants. God doesn’t just forgive you; He reinstates you, celebrates you, and throws a party over your return.

This is why church shouldn’t be dull—it’s a gathering of the redeemed celebrating what Christ has done. You have a reason to rejoice: where sin abounded, grace abounded all the more. Stop living in the pigpen of shame. Accept your Father’s embrace, wear the robe of His righteousness, and join the celebration. You were dead, but now you’re alive. You were lost, but now you’re found.

Reflection:

  • Do you find it easier to see yourself as forgiven or as fully restored and celebrated? Why? What makes it hard to accept the “robe, ring, and sandals” of grace
  • How can you join the Father’s celebration this week—both in how you worship Him and how you treat others who are returning from their own “far countries”?
