The Danger of Over-Functioning
Devotional From The Sermon: The Anxiety-Free Life: The Anxiety of Advancement
Min. Jordan DeVeaux
Reading: Luke 10:38-42
Devotional:
Martha’s anxious activity mirrors our modern frenzy. When Jesus visited, she busied herself with preparations while Mary sat at His feet. Jesus gently corrected her: “You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed, or indeed only one.” When we’re anxious, we over-function, taking on tasks God never assigned us. We build towers, start projects, accumulate degrees…anything to silence the inner voice questioning our worth. But Jesus invites us to the “one thing needed”: His presence. Close some tabs in your mind. Put down the unnecessary burdens. Your worth isn’t measured by your productivity. Sit at Jesus’ feet and discover that being with Him is the greatest achievement.
Reflection:
- In what part of your life do you most resemble Martha (“worried and upset about many things”) and what might Jesus be gently saying to you there?
- What is one task, role, or expectation you sense God did not assign you that you can lay down this week to better sit at Jesus’ feet?
