The Exchange: Giving God Your Burden

Devotional From The Sermon: When We Pray

Rev. Katrina Tatum

Reading:

Philippians 4:6-7

Devotional:

The Shunammite woman did not ask for the son she received, yet she lost him. Still, she did not collapse in despair. She took the dead weight of her grief and placed it on the prophet’s bed – an act of surrender before God. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us that prayer is not merely speaking words; it is an exchange. We bring our anxiety, our loss, our confusion, and in return God offers shalom; peace that surpasses human understanding. What dead thing are you still holding in your lap today? Release it. God is waiting to make the exchange.

Reflection Questions:

  • What burden have you been carrying that you have not yet surrendered to God in prayer?
  • In what ways have you experienced God’s peace following a season of prayer?

Practical Application:

Write down one specific concern that is weighing on you. Pray over it deliberately, and then physically set the paper aside as a symbolic act of releasing that burden to God.
